SUMMARY:Beach Rockhounding
DESCRIPTION:We are hitting the beaches tomorrow along the coast starting at Morro Bay Dog Beach at Toro Creek Inlet (2.67 mi. north of Hwy 1. jct. Hwy 41) at 9:00 a.m.\n\nWhen done there\, I will head up Hwy 1 to Cambria to the beach at Santa Rosa Creek Inlet at Shamel Park (south Moonstone Beach).\n\nWhen done there I will proceed on to San Simeon State Beach at San Simeon Creek Inlet parking at the Washburn Campground and probably finish there. You all are warmly welcome to join me in this tri-club (SLR\, SLOGMC\, OMS) field trip.\n\nThe tides don’t matter at these beaches but given the stormy seas NEVER turn your back to the ocean and always keep at least one eye on it as sneaker waves are a thing. There is also quicksand at San Simeon Creek Inlet where the creek meets the ocean so beware.\n\nThings to find include various types of quartz including beach-tumbled crystalline quartz\, chalcedony\, agate\, carnelian\, various colors of jasper\, brecciated jasper\, orbicular jasper\, jasper-agate\, various colors of chert\, various types of serpentine\, small thunder egg fragments at Toro Creek and Santa Rosa Creek Inlets (from the ridgeline upon which the Fitzhugh Ranch is situated)\, Chumash points & tools\, various colors of seaglass\, and driftwood.

SUMMARY:Prefumo Canyon Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:Sorry for the late announcement of this field trip\, but this particular site is prone to being picked over early by competing rockhounds and I want to get us in fresh and first.\n\nThis Saturday\, February 18th\, I am leading a field trip to Prefumo Creek in the Irish Hills Nature Preserve on the west side of San Luis Obispo Obispo.\n\nWe will be meeting at the Prefumo Canyon trailhead 9/10-mile up Prefumo Canyon Road from Los Osos Valley Road at 10 a.m.\nMore rain is forecasted for the second half of next week and with the water level down in the creek we need to strike while the iron is hot.\n\nYou are advised to wear amphibious footwear as ankle-deep and sometimes knee-deep water will be the rule\, not the exception. Also\, bring a bag or bucket or backpack to carry your rocks. A rock pick or gads bar might be useful in prying out colorful brecciated jaspers looking similar to Stone Canyon Jasper as well as other colorful jaspers and some decorative & artistic creek-tumbled thick glass shards.\n\nI checked this site Wednesday evening and saw no signs it had been picked over yet and within 10 minutes of searching near the trailhead found all sorts of great jaspers. Poison oak does grow along the banks of the creek in some sections but is in its dormant phase at present.\nKim Patrick NoyesField Trip Coordinator
