SUMMARY:Gaviota Coast Field Trip
DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, January 28th\, we will be heading down to the Gaviota Coast of Santa Barbara County. We will assemble at the western end of Dinosaur Caves Park in Pismo Beach at 8:30 a.m. Saturday\, no later than 9:00 a.m. and possibly a bit earlier.\nWe will depart and convoy down Highway 101 to El Capitan State Beach. We will start there and work our way back west/north as high tide will be at 4:10 p.m. That beach is both safe and great to rockhound at any tide level. There will be a 2.9-foot low tide at 10:17 a.m. so by the time we are on that coastline the tide will be low enough for the other state beaches like Refugio and Gaviota and uncontrolled beaches such as Arroyo Hondo\, Mariposa Reina\, etc. west of there.\n\nWhat we are hunting are various Franciscan Formation jaspers\, cherts\, chalcedonies\, agates\, calcites\, and Mid-Miocene petrified whale bone\, petrified driftwood\, and marine invertebrate fossils\, and always the potential for an arrowhead as well as seaglass more commonly. If you like seashells this coastline is fairly generous on that count as well. It is best if you wear a hat and use sunscreen\, bring water and even lunch\, and wear footwear that can get you over rocks and yet can get wet if you are willing to get your feet wet. Water shoes and sandals are perfect. However\, you can still have a great time staying dry. Be aware that naturally-occurring tar is a thing along the Gaviota Coast.\n\nI will be driving a metallic 1994 Honda Accord and I can be reached at 805-610-0603. If you wish to meet us down there because you live south of Pismo Beach that is just fine and/or if you need to catch up with us later than our departure time.\n\nNOTE: the entry fee to the state beaches is $10/car but is good at each state beach in that State Parks unit so you only pay once for the entire day no matter where you go and for how short or long. There is an amazing place to eat across the freeway from the state park in El Capitan Canyon private campground which has a great market & deli.
